What is MedPay?

Home / FAQ / Personal Injury FAQ / What is MedPay?

MedPay, also referred to as medical payments coverage, is an optional add-on available in many states for car insurance policies. In the unfortunate event of a car accident, MedPay provides valuable coverage by assisting in the payment of medical expenses for both you and your passengers, regardless of fault.

What Does MedPay Cover?

Compared to health insurance or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, MedPay’s coverage limits are often lower, making it less useful for paying accident-related medical bills. MedPay only covers medical costs. In short, it does not pay for other losses that would be covered by other insurance policies, such as lost earnings or vehicle repairs. In most cases, MedPay pays for various medical expenses, such as doctor visits, surgeries, X-rays, rehabilitation, and even burial costs in the terrible event of a fatal accident.

Insurance Premiums Aren’t Affected By MedPay

Typically, insurance premiums are not affected as a result of filing a MedPay claim. MedPay is different from liability insurance and is often not taken into account when determining future premiums. This is not the same as making a claim on liability insurance, which could result in increased premiums.

You Are Covered Regardless Of Who’s At Fault

One of MedPay’s key benefits is that it is applicable regardless of fault.  You can still use this coverage to cover your medical costs whether or not you were at fault for the accident. Depending on the conditions of the policy, it may even extend to pay for the medical bills of your passengers.

MedPay Is A Supplementary Coverage

It’s important to remember that MedPay is not a replacement for health insurance. Instead, it serves as an additional form of insurance for car accident-related medical costs. If you have a large health insurance deductible or no health insurance at all, it may be especially helpful.

How Much Coverage Should I Get?

The normal range of MedPay limits, depending on the state and insurance, is $1,000 to $10,000. We recommend that everyone elect MedPay coverage.

State Variations In MedPay Coverage And Regulations

MedPay coverage and regulations are not standardized but instead vary from state to state. It is important to acknowledge this and become familiar with the specific laws, requirements, limits, and optional enhancements that pertain to MedPay in your particular area. By doing so, you can ensure compliance, make informed decisions, and determine the most suitable coverage options for your specific needs.
